Bettas, plants, and shrimp thrive in tanks smaller than 10 gallons. But, regular water changes, and maintenance become essential when keeping smaller tanks or nano tanks.
Being a little more attentive to your smaller tanks is actually quite fun, it keeps you more connected to it and actually provides a relaxing break from normal life. And frequent and consistent water changes are perhaps the best way to prevent a disease outbreak. But, at one point or another, all fish keepers experience an outbreak of disease. Depending on the type of disease or illness, an entire tank or multiple tanks can be completely wiped out. Becoming familiar with common betta fish diseases before they occur can mean the difference between a fish dying and living.
Keeping a betta fish first aid kit is a smart way to battle disease when it happens not if. As surprising as it may seem, forcing your betta to swim and flare his fins may drastically increase his lifespan. The other betta fish were kept in tanks of several gallons and were chased around with a stick for a fixed amount of time. The betta fish that were kept in larger tanks a subjected to forced exercise, loved to be over nine years old.
The reason for this disparity in lifespan, the scientists discovered, resulted from fatty degeneration of organs and tissues. The betta fish in the small jars simply built up too much fat and were not able to exercise it away. Your betta fish may live far longer if he is housed in a larger aquarium and given regular exercise. This will cause your betta fish think that a rival is nearby and encourage your betta to display and flare his fins. Moving the mirror at regular intervals to a different side of the tank will encourage your betta to swim to that area.
While this type of stimulation is healthy for your betta, make sure to remove the mirror after a set amount of time so that your betta is not spending the entire day displaying, which may over stress your betta. Hope this helps good luck!! Before bringing home the fish was very active in the pet store. I have fish bowl.
Now at home, the fish has become very lazy, always at the bottom of the bowl. Is this because of the weather? The weather is quite cold here. Please help me. I changed the water and that day the fish was happy. Now today its being lazy again.
Hmm, you mention cold. Betta fish should be in water of degreesF. Betta fish can get ill and act lethargic if not in the right conditions. He has a castle that he loves to go in and a fake leaf hammock that he lays on. I have seen suggestions of putting plants in their tanks and was wondering if this meant fake plants or real plants?
If it is real plants, what kind of plants can go in their tank? I am thinking of investing in a larger tank after reading your responses. Hi, My fish Frank has been lately producing alot of bubbles in the fish bowl. What does that mean? Is it a safe sign? Yes, this is a perfectly healthy and natural sign. We have a blog on bettas fish bubble nests here where you can read all about it. My betta fish is just staying in one corner of his tank and not swimming at all.
He also looked like he was going to fall but stayed up. Please tell us what could be wrong because I am very worried!!!! I used to have a betta when I was ten, but it was a split very small tank with no filter. It died after about a year. I was looking at the national geographic betta 2.
Hi had a beta for 2. I have the big vase with plant on top. Do you think the cleaning chemicals got in his water somehow and killed him? We just got our Betta a week ago, its in a little over 6 gallon tank and loves swimming around this helicopter we got for it.
However we were curious as to how we could figure out the gender of the fish? Not entirely sure how we could do that.. Another question, we forgot to ask how old the fish was when we bought it at Wal-Mart-is there any way we would be able to tell how old it is? Hi our beta, Olaff, was doing fine and all of the sudden we noticed he was laying on his side at the top of the tank. He is still breathing and if you tap on the side of the tank gently he will move around but goes back on his side.
He has a 3 gallon tank and we got him about 6 months ago. Hi, this sounds like your betta fish has had a problem with his swim bladder, not allowing him to float.
This is not god as betta fish like to come to the surface of the water to breathe every now and again. Lower your water level so that it is easier for him to come to the top. Swim bladder disorders usually come from the betta fish being fed too much — they only have tiny stomachs and if these get bloated it effects the swim bladder. My male beta keeps floating on his side. Hes also loosing color. I have him in a 1.
Fake plant and the bigger rock gems in the bottom. What am I doing wrong? Is he too old? Is he dying? Thank you. Have a look into swim bladder disorder. This is common in betta fish and often overfeeding can cause problems with the swim bladder. My sister wants a betta. Hi Emily, Goldfish and betta fish should not live together. I have a blog about betta fish living with goldfish here.
Nice page. I have a Double Veil Tail and his name is Ormus. Named after the character in the 3rd act of Diablo 2 lol. Anyhow I just wanted to say that he is my first betta and they are great fish.
I have him in a 20 gallon tall and I have it planted with about a dozen anubias nana and coffeefolia attached to nice drift wood. Bettas are such inquisitive fish. He swims and explores all day and I have him in with 9 dwarf zebra loaches which he sometimes chases from his favorite spots in the tank but they house well together. I can put bits of food on my finger tips and he eats from my hands.
Anyhow, that is my fish story and I just wanted to say nice site. I have a fish named Twitch. He have a bowl with a heating light, but it is only 2 gallons, He seems to be happy, and I make sure that he gets everything he needs.
Should I buy a bigger tank? What do you suggest. We have been taking care of our pet betta for over a year. His name is Pudro!! Is it safe to use bottled Nestle water for his tank or should we stick to tap water?? It seemd like the bottlef water doesnt get dirty as fast as tap. I have a heater, filter, and water that is purified with these little dissolvable tablets.
I plan to move her to a gallon tank in about a week. But even with all of that, the water always seems a little cloudy and I sometimes find her resting on the gravel until she sees me. I have a hard time believing that they need 5 gallon tank, filter, heater etc to live long and happy lives. My betta fish Blue is in a 1 gallon tank, no fliter and no heater. I clean his bowl about twice a month and he is over 5 years old. The male is a bit older than the female. When I put the two fish together the male starts trying to eat the female.
Any tips? Well it is — however it isnt recommended. Betta fish have a slime layer over their fins which protects them from bacteria and disease. Hello, I grew up with bettas i have had 5 of them in my life. My last one just passed away after 9 years a couple of months ago and my sister just got me a new one for my birthday.

One thing I was wanting to ask is? If my pH is high and nitrates but other tests good what do I do? To do better? I have 6 Bettas 5 gallon tanks. Plus one 10 gallon. Hi Cindy, if you have high pH tap water, I would recommend using spring water instead, although that may get expensive if you have that many tanks.
You can also add a lot of live plants or real driftwood can help, or lastly, they do have products that lower pH that you can find online or at your local pet store. I recently bought a 5. I have a square glass 2. I am confused about that. Would you clarify if I have a heater, then I must have a filter or no? You could use the filter if you can slow the water coming into the tank enough, or you can use a sponge-filter setup as well which produces almost no current.
For your primary question, it should only matter more in larger tanks where a heater might be in one area of the tank and not be able to adequately disperse to the rest of the tank. I am an intermediately experienced betta owner, however, this is my first try with a sorority tank.
Do you think by her being alone for so long, this would be asking for trouble? In their current conditions they are all fairly docile.
I should note also, that Ruby was in with another fish when I first got her and she kept her distance, but he kept chasing her and nipped a fin so I removed her immediately. Any advice would be so helpful! First, gallons would be the minimum size for a sorority, and a gallon long tank would be best.
All betta personalities are different which complicates advice. Also be very careful buying baby bettas labeled females from fish stores because sometimes they are mis-labeled and turn out to be males. Make sure you know how to identify the sex of them, especially if one turns out to be a male so you can remove it. I would get at least two more baby bettas who are roughly the same size as GA and Skye in varying colors if possible and introduce them sooner rather than later.
Sororities can be tough…so always have a backup plan to remove one if they are just too aggressive for the pack. I just got a beautiful male Betta for my toddlers to watch. I have had Bettas in the past, but this one seems obsessed with a seashell properly cleaned and aquarium safe — he displays in front of it and puffs up. Should I remove the seashell? Or is this actually enhancing his environment? Has he calmed down around it yet? Some flaring behavior is beneficial, yes, but prolonged aggression can potentially cause too much stress.
Is it a very bright color? I breed bettas as well as run a fish rescue program. I have over the last two years taken in 3 very old bettas. One past away at 10 another at 11 and i still have an oldest at 13 years of age. He isnt very active but he thrives in a 10g with plants. Ive had a couple people joke that i run a betta retirement centre. Is it alright for my male beta to lay down in the tank he came in because it is small environment.
Resting in the temporary housing is fine, but the betta needs to be acclimated to a new permanent habitat. They are just like other intelligent animals, with displaying as one of their hardwired behaviors… hey he displays to show off to the guys, and to attract a female!!! Mine look forward to being with me, as much as I am with them… print different backgrounds to tape to the tank each day… etc… there are so many simple, easy things you can create, just use your imagination… your beta will love you for it!
If I am remembering correctly, the cups in the stores, the way they are designed and curved actually limit or prevent each betta from seeing each other very clearly. You are correct in that providing a stimulating and varied environment is excellent to keep your fish from being bored. Do be careful, however, in allowing them to see each other constantly like that because if non-stop flaring happens it can be very stressful. Your email address will not be published.
