The use of insecticides is generally ineffective. Poorly drained soil or soil that is constantly wet overwatered may also attract fungus gnats , a type of fruit fly. Red blotch Stagonospora curtissi is a fungus disease that may affect both the appearance and the health of amaryllis plants. However, this disease is not usually fatal to the plant.
Red spots or blotches that develop into elongated cankers with red borders may develop on the base of the flower stalks and emerging leaves. The disease is often difficult to diagnose because superficial small red or pink patches may appear on the outside of healthy bulbs. The fleshy layers of the bulb underneath these patches should be white and free of markings. The leaves may become distorted and the flower stalks may break easily making the plants unsightly. The University of Minnesota is an equal opportunity educator and employer. Home Yard and garden Find plants Houseplants Amaryllis. Amaryllis flowers range from 4 to 10 inches in size and can be either single or double in form. Selecting, planting and caring for bulbs Amaryllis bulbs come in various sizes. Open all Close all. Selecting bulbs. Planting Amaryllis grow best in narrow containers. Bulbs should be firm and dry with no signs of mold, decay or injury.
Select a container that has one or more holes in the bottom and drains easily. Good drainage will minimize the chance of bulb or root rot rotting from excess moisture. The diameter of the pot should be about 1 inch wider than the widest part of the bulb and twice as tall as the bulb to allow space for good root development.
Fill the pot about half full with sterile, new potting soil high in organic matter such as peat moss. Set the bulb in the pot so the roots rest on the potting soil.
The bulb should sit up above the edge of the container. Add more soil, tapping it down around the bulb, until one-third to one-half of the bulb remains visible. Firm the potting medium around the bulb. Set the pot in a sink where it can drain freely and water until the potting soil is thoroughly moist. Allow to drain completely. Set the pot on a saucer and place in a sunny window. The long, strap-like leaves of amaryllis will photosynthesize and create energy that is stored in the bulb and used to create future flowers.
An actively growing plant will require frequent watering and fertilization. Water when the soil at the top of the pot is dry, and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every weeks. Once the risk of frost has passed in the spring, move your amaryllis outside for the summer where it can receive more sunlight. Like any other houseplant, the amaryllis should be gradually hardened before placing it in direct sun to avoid burning foliage. Start by placing the bulb in a shady place and gradually expose it to more sun each day over a week-long period.
Once the amaryllis has adjusted to outdoor conditions, bring it into an area with full sun and continue to water and fertilize regularly. Bring the plant back indoors before the first frost. There is likely no need to repot your amaryllis in the first season. Amaryllis actually grow best when they are slightly pot-bound and may only need to be repotted every three or four years.
Besides the benefit of a gorgeous floral arrangement, cutting your flowers can help your amaryllis bulb bloom again. The best time to cut your flowers to showcase in a vase is before the buds begin it open. Snip the plant at a degree angle with a sharp knife and immediately transfer the cut stems to water. Fill the vase with tepid water and add in a floral preserve to help extend the life of the bloom.
Now you can place your amaryllis flowers in the vase. You should change out the water and add more preservative every couple of days. Since the stems are hollow, you can insert a support—a flower cane or even a straw, to help support the heaviness of the flower.
