Charming, and hugely enjoyable! This is a hugely enjoyable film, based upon the book by Roald Dahl. The film does have a number of merits, especially the flawless performance of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, a characterisation that is charming and funny at the same time. Another standout is Jack Albertson as Grandpa Joe, his scenes with Charlie were lovingly realised, but in his song, he was just hilarious, and his singing voice was remarkably good.
However, whereas Peter Ostrum is perfectly agreeable in terms of acting as Charlie, he is let down by his lack of any real singing ability. Though the film does look beautiful with excellent cinematography and colourful sets, and the supporting characters like the Oompa Loompas, the odiously spoilt Veruca Salt, television addict Mike Tevee and the rather disgusting Violet Bueragarde, are very well done, and the actors are further advantaged by a wonderful sparkling script.
Overall, a beautiful film, and I do think it is underrated. TheLittleSongbird Jun 15, FAQ While traveling through the tunnel, what were the images that appeared and scared everyone? Details Edit. Learn more. So we're playing around with that. Gene Wilder's portrayal of Willy Wonka left the character's backstory ambiguous, while the movie starring Johnny Depp added in flashbacks to Willy Wonka's mean dentist father. So we're exploring that. We're discussing it. We're in the very early stages and very excited about what lies ahead.
By Ale Russian. When Wonka found them, they lived in huts in the trees to escape from various creatures, and were struggling to get food. They ate mashed caterpillars, which tasted terrible, and would mash them with other things like eucalyptus leaves or beetles to make them taste better, but what they truly wanted were cacao beans.
To help them, Wonka offered them to work for him and live at the factory, where he would pay them with cacao beans and they could also eat all the chocolate they wanted. Each film has had its own version of the Oompa-Loompas: in the version, they were orange-skinned, with green hair, and wore brown shirts with striped wrists and collars, and baggy lederhosen-like pants unlike in the book, where they insisted on keeping their native clothing: animal skins for men, leaves for women, and nothing for children.
In this film, the Oompa-Loompas wore uniforms of different colors, depending on the area they worked at. The effects in it are practical, and the factory is as colorful and unreal as expected. Both films follow the main idea of the book: Willy Wonka hid five golden tickets in chocolate bars, and the kids who found them were granted entrance to the factory.
Over the course of the tour, various mishaps resulted in the group being reduced more and more until only one kid was left, who got a big prize at the end.
